Situating age determination in post-colonial relations

What is the impact of colonialism and racism on the idea and practice of migration and age determination today? We analyze the relationship between colonial economic relations involving Bremen and the legal and medical categorizations of non-European migrants as non-citizens.

How are post-colonialism, migration and age estimations connected?

“I'm just a slave who has been taken from Africa to here.”
“There is a long history of measuring and defining non-white persons and not to accept what they say.”
Age determination is a continuation of colonial practices.

"an extra law for extra humans”  | Migration law

“Any form of migration law is an extra law that is treating people different from others.”
“When the Europeans went to Africa we didn't ask them about their age.”
“I come here as any other person who wants to travel and look for better work to make money. This is what Europeans do.”
“If a white man goes to my country without any document, then he would be given a chance to explain.”
“If white people go to Africa we treat them well. We don't tell them: ‘You are illegal here.’”
